Editorial Review
Dr. Parris Kidd is the leading international authority on the roles of phospholipids in brain functions. This is an excellent book that fairly represents the proven power of PS to measurably improve the human brain. --Thomas H. Crook, III, PhD, renowned memory assessment expert; former Chief, Geriatric Psychopharmacology, U.S. NIMH
Emerging science has shown that it may be possible to prevent Alzheimer's disease. There is no magic bullet, but PS is very effective at reversing signs of memory loss. In my clinical experience, it's actually quite remarkable. --Dharma Singh Khalsa, MD, Medical Director, Alzheimer's Prevention Foundation, USA.
This book provides the most current research in brain physiology, in a user friendly format. Dr. Kidd's information is desperately important for all of us wanting to maintain and even improve our brain health. --David Perlmutter, MD, FACN; neurologist, leading integrative physician; author, The Better Brain Book.
Product Description
This book is an easy read on a natural substance that can turn back the clock on aging. Authored by an acclaimed expert on brain nutrition, Dr. Parris Kidd, it is a presentation of a vital lipid nutrient that is concentrated in the human brain and is crucial to our intelligence and survival. PS (chemical name PhosphatidylSerine) has been put through more than 25 double-blind clinical trials, more research attention than pharmaceuticals normally get. The author explains how this gold standard of human research proves PS is a real-life memory booster and also that PS is useful for learning and mood and for coping with the challenges of daily life. Our brain cells use PS to generate and transmit the electrical signals that make the brain perform. PS actually helps the nerve cells generate the energy they need to maintain the brain's electrical circuits. PS is a key molecular building block (a phospholipid, pronounced fos-fo-lip-id) for the dynamic structures called membranes that keep our cells alive.
Membranes enriched in PS enable the tiny mitochondria in our cells to generate that needed energy. PS is an orthomolecule (a molecule orthodox to our cells) and therefore familiar to our tissues as they employ its molecular attributes. Used for decades in Europe as a dietary supplement, PS was introduced into North America by a visionary team with Dr. Kidd as their technical resource.
PS is very safe to take long-term, and has benefits at every age, whether nine or ninety. PS helps with behavioral and learning problems in children, mental difficulties in midlife, and the memory decline that can threaten our independence as we age.
In a double-blind trial with healthy over-50s subjects, famed memory researcher Dr. Tom Crook and his team found that PS could restore up to 12 years worth of lost mental function. PS also helps young, healthy people cope with anxiety, neuroticism, and stress. PS when used by itself, or better still with other safe nutrients such as the related vital lipid GPC (GlyceroPhosphoCholine), is a mood enhancer and supports all the brain s healthy functions. This second edition also introduces omega-3 PS, the next-generation natural PS molecule that includes the lifesaving omega-3 nutrients EPA and DHA. As a cornerstone for brain conservation programs, including attention to diet, lifestyle, and mental and physical exercise, PS has the potential to add years to our lives and life to our years. Authoritative yet surprisingly easy to follow, this is the story of a wonderful nutrient that may someday save your brain.
About the Author
Dr. Parris Kidd grew up in Jamaica and there earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Zoology and Marine Biology, with Special First-Class Honors. He then received a coveted Jamaican Government scholarship to earn his PhD at the University of California, Berkeley in cell biology. He then received grants from the California Heart Association and the United States National Institutes of Health to study heart and blood vessel disease. In 1983 he decided to reorient his training to substances that improve our cell biology without hurting our cells. These are the orthomolecules, molecules orthodox to the body as defined by Nobel laureate Linus Pauling. Dr. Kidd has since written books and numerous articles on antioxidants, cell membrane molecules, enzyme cofactors, and all the other dietary substances that improve health and help prevent disease. His latest books , PS (PhosphatidylSerine), Nature's Brain Booster: A Vital Lipid for Memory, Mood and Stress ; and GPC (GlyceroPhosphoCholine), Mind-Body Power for Active Living and Healthy Aging: A Vital Lipid for Survival detail for the layperson two of the most fascinating orthomolecules ever discovered.
