Theories of Aging

Wear and Tear Aging Theory

The wear and tear theory of aging says that the body and its cells are damaged over time by use and abuse. The organs – liver, stomach, kidneys, skin, etc. – are worn down by toxins in the diet and the environment, by the excess consumption of fat, sugar, caffeine, alcohol and nicotine, by the ultraviolet rays of the sun, and by the many physical and emotional stresses to which our bodies are subject. Wear and tear is not confined to the organs, but exhibits at the cellular level also.

This theory holds that moderate exercise, good diet, nutritional supplements, and other treatments can help reverse the aging process by stimulating the body’s own ability to repair and maintain its organs and cells.

Neuroendocrine Theory of Aging

Hormones are vital for repairing and regulating body functions. When aging causes a drop in hormone production, it causes a decline in your body’s ability to repair and regulate itself efficiently. The neuroendocrine system is made up of these hormones which regulate many body functions. Hormones are regulated by the hypothalamus gland which is located within the brain.

Hormone replacement therapy helps to affect more efficient body functioning.

Genetic Control Theory

DNA (dioxyriboneuclaic acid) controls the functioning of the cells and organs of the body. The genetic control theory postulates that DNA is programmed with a certain lifespan. As the DNA ages, it directs the cells to age and then to begin to die.

Antioxidants and anti-aging treatments act to support and extend the life of DNA. Coenzyme Q10 has been shown to protect DNA from free-radical induced oxidative damage.

Free Radical Theory

A free radical is a molecule with an extra electron. It is inherently unstable, attempting to bond with another molecule to steal a matching electron and attain electrical equilibrium. In doing this the free radicals create new free radicals and extensive bodily damage. That damage can be in the form of RNA and DNA damage, interfere with the synthesis of proteins and destroy cellular enzymes which are needed for vital chemical processes. As people age, this free radical damage can create mutant cells, leading ultimately to cancer and death.

Free radical damage is also known as oxidation. Substances that prevent the harmful effects of oxidation are known as antioxidants. Common antioxidants include Vitamins C, E, and beta carotene, the precursor to Vitamin A. Many other substances have antioxidant properties including Coenzyme Q10, alpha lipoic acid (sometimes called the universal antioxidant), N-acetylcysteine, flavonoids from plants which include green tea, grape seed, turmeric, lycopene (from tomatoes), and bilberry. The antioxidant value of nutrients is measured on the ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) scale.
